I find it really difficult to find affordable artwork for clients that still feels unique and evokes an emotional response.  Everything I tend to be drawn to has a price that is followed by at least 3 zeros, usually more.

I know that there are creative solutions to the art issue, its wonderful when a client already has an amazing art collection, but this is definitely an area where I struggle.

What are some of your favorite places to shop for affordable, one of a kind art?

Stainless Steel Mosaic Tile

I’m hoping to use this amazing and gorgeous and shimmery stainless steel mosaic tile on a project that I am working on.

I’ll pair the stainless mosaics with matte white Corian countertops and an island clad in travertine slab…

wallpaper cabinet, finally!!!

The wallpaper cabinet that I had made was finished over a month ago and I finally had a chance to take a few snapshots…

Subway tile is a tried and true choice for kitchens and bathrooms.  It’s kind of a classic.

Still, there are plenty of times where I just don’t want to go with the status quo…

I love a classic white brick subway tile, but sometimes its fun to color outside the lines.

I’ve been working on this mid-century architectural home and my client really wants the items we select to feel period.  She is also drawn to really modern objects and furnishings.

We have approached her home with the perspective that we will be respectful of the period in which the home was built (1964), but with modern updates.

I had this gorgeous Nina Campbell wallpaper installed and it couldn’t have been more perfect.  The pattern in the paper feels so 1960’s, but the hand drawn flowers outlined in black make it feel more modern and updated.

Paired with a 1960’s danish modern rocker upholstered in Knoll fabric with a cushion in a China Seas linen, a custom night table, a custom bed also in Knoll fabric and vintage lamp and you have the perfect mix of modern and vintage all in one.

It was so good, I didn’t want to leave…

new bedding

I just got some new bedding.  I was ready for a change and we really needed new sheets.  I was getting tired of the all white and I have this black and white ikat duvet cover that I got at West Elm a while back, but I’ve still just been using my white sheets.

Today I went bold for me and mixed and matched some blue bedding from Roberta Roller Rabbit.

I’ve also been loving this Bruschwig & Fils Dzhambul fabric and have been thinking I would make 3 euro shams for my bed but I haven’t been able to make up my mind…

Here are my multiple bedding options, I was feeling like I wanted to change the wall color behind my bed, but now I’m thinking maybe no, just go for the Dzhambul istead.

What do you think, do I do the Dzhambul, do I paint the wall, do I do both, nothing??? Decorating for myself is such a challenge!!!

Here is the new fitted sheet and blue shams, bold move for me as my bed is usually all white.

Here it is paired with the Dzhambul fabric that I like…I’ll still have my white duvet which will mostly cover the busy sheet.  What do you think?

When I want a change of pace, here is my black and white ikat bedding.  I know, my duvet cover needs a serious ironing, tell it to my 2 year old and 5 1/2 year old…

algue

When I worked for Vitra they came out with this product called Algue.  I loved it and wanted to find an opportunity to use it.

Then I forgot about it.

I have been looking for something to put on the wall above a client’s dining table for months with no luck.  The objects that I have found have been out of budget, and even more challenging, my client didn’t want anything to cover the grasscloth that we had installed on that wall.

So I have been looking for something with presence, that is interesting and has a light airy quality that allows the shimmery grasscloth to shine.

I was at Dwell on Design in June and it hit me.  I walked past a display with some poorly executed Algue in it and I knew that it was perfect.

I told my client about it and we ordered it right away.

We ordered 2 boxes of the product, each box includes 25 approx. 12″ x 10″ pieces.  My client and I spent a day last week assembling the Algue ourselves and are quiet proud of the result.

We started assembling on the dining table.  This is 4 pieces of Algue snapped together with little pegs that are provided.

We kept holding it up to the wall to see how we liked it.

We realized that in order to keep adding on to it we would need to mount the piece to the wall.  It was becoming unruly to move it from the table to the wall.

In this image the algue sculpture is nearly done, we added a few more on the right side and decided to walk away for the day to live with it and see if we wanted to add more.  When we know its complete, I’ll share a few pics of it in the space.
